Brief Overview of Thai Law

Thailand is a civil law country, which means its basic legal system is similar to those in Europe, and different to the common law systems of the US, Canada, Australia, NZ or the UK.

Important features of the Thai legal system include:

•both civil and criminal trials are conducted by a judge or judges, without a jury

•as courts normally use Thai language, testimony, evidence and documents in a foreign language must be translated into Thai before they can be used in court

H. Toosi’s advice concerning employment disputes in Thailand:

Thai labor law protects workers' rights and is different to laws in other countries. Before making any decision about employment - hiring, promoting, transferring, warning or firing - obtain advice from your lawyer.
